A Weekend of Folly
Until the Canadian Grand Prix, I’d kind of forgotten why I’d fallen in love with Formula 1, which is to say it’s been a very long time since we had a race with multiple lead changes, safety cars, changeable weather conditions, and a bevy of mistakes from even the G.O.A.T..
Let’s start with that G.O.A.T., aka Lewis Hamilton. In his own words, he declared this one of the worst race weekends he’s driven in a while. That’s pretty amazing considering he still almost ended up on the podium, losing out to Merc teammate George Russell by one place. But, since he’s won over 100 times, I see where he’s coming from.
I wish I could have seen how he was actually driving on the SKY Sports broadcast, but alas this was not to be. For about the first third of the race, the only real battle was between Hamilton and Fernando Alonso, but they barely showed it.
What I could tell from the timing screen is that every time Lewis got close to what seemed like an easy pass, he ended up dropping seconds. I suspect he almost lost the car a couple of times on the wet line trying to make those passes, and this is what he’s referring to in terms of having a bad weekend. With some better TV production, I would have known.
